DIALECT COACHING

Dialect coach Lereaney talks the talk -Calgary Herald, page 38 - 21 Apr 2012

David Lereaney teaches Americans how to sound Canadian and Canucks how to sound American It may seem a bit of a cliche. But when coaching American actor Aidan Quinn on how to sound more Canadian, Calgarian David Lereaney advised him to pepper his dialogue with a few “ehs” every now and then. talking the talk

David has been a respected coach and teacher of dialects and accents since 1998 through his company Dial/Act Inc, having taught at almost every college and university in Alberta. He has been the dialect coach on many theatrical productions and made in Alberta films such as PAPA’S ANGELS, JOHNSON COUNTY WAR, THE DEATH AND LIFE OF NANCY EATON, LIES MY MOTHER TOLD ME, INTO THE WEST, BROKEN TRAIL, AND CAROLINA MOON, coaching Academy Award winner Eva Marie Saint, Jessica Pare, Rachel Ward, Emmy winner Cynthia Nixon, Oscar winner Brenda Fricker, Matthew Modine, Golden Globe winner Kerri Russel, Skeet Ulrich, Joely Richardson, Greta Scacchi (performance nominated for an Emmy), Clair Forlani and Jacqueline Bisset and many others.

David specializes in GENERAL AMERICAN DIALECT for Canadian actors offering a 3 hour seminar on standard American dialect and pronunciation which he has conducted for hundreds of Canadian actors from Calgary to Toronto.
3 1/2 HOUR SEMINAR includes:

  • Lecture/demo on the sound of "Americanese"
  • Comprehensive notes and list of over 85 words, phrases and sounds (CD included)
  • Practical workout with TV and film scripts
David also offers a GENERAL DIALECT AND ACCENT WORKSHOP designed to provide actors with the tools and techniques  needed to intelligently tackle any dialect and accent they may encounter.  He brings twenty-nine years of professional experience as a character actor to this course, and opens the vault to his extensive audio library of audio dialect samples.

In this workshop he shares his methodology and love for regional dialects and accents through an in-depth examination of specific dialects, identifying and isolating their essential elements - vowel sounds, consonant sounds, musicality, emphasis, tonal placement, idioms, and language-specific sounds. By employing careful study of authentic audio dialect samples, participants will learn to apply these elements to any dialect or accent. Practical in-class work  include application of the dialects to dialogue (film, TV and theatre scripts), prose or poetry pieces.

As well, David offers private coaching for actors in any dialect or accent for auditions or performance, providing every actor with a set of comprehensive notes on the dialect and a CD of primary audio dialect samples.

Accent reduction is also available for speakers of English as a second language.

Contact David for rates and availability.
